It's the WKBN News at 5-O'clock, and as the newscast is winding down before tossing it to the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelle, sports anchor Ryan Allison is coming down to his final story...
Allison: "and finally, we received word a few hours ago that a familiar face to the Youngstown State University football family is coming home, sort of. Former NCAA Division 1-AA record setting quarterback Steven Gold will soon be in the region, but not to play football.
You may recall that Gold, seen here in the 2009 Humanitarian Bowl where he led YSU to a 49-14 win over Boise State, left football after his senior year to pursue the game of professional wrestling. Well after three years with a company in Australia, Gold has signed a contract with the Pennsylvania-based Wilkes/Barre Scranton Wrestling organization, and we're told by a company spokesperson that Gold is expected to be on the WBSW card on Oct. 27, so that should be interesting to see...
And that's sports...."
As the lead anchor makes the toss to the CBS news, the screen of the TV clicks off and fades out. The scene fades back to reveal a hotel room, and the back of a tall man, blonde hair, holding the remote control, sitting in a chair. He stands and walks across the room, sliding open the curtain and looking out across the parking area....in his mind, he thinks...
"Not much of a view, but it'll do. I've got time before the 27th, guess I better find a gym to work out at. Gotta be in shape when I bring the new 'Gold Standard' of professional wrestling to the WBSW."
"After all, if that's going to be my introduction and the first step back to wrestling glory in my native country, by all means, my introduction has to be absolutely stunning. Nothing more, nothing less. The time is near, and how I get to the top in this company makes no difference to me.
Right, wrong, by the book, by any means necessary, I don't really care. I want to achieve the glory in this region I used to know, long before those idiots in the NFL tried to make me a fifth-round draft pick...and to where? Buffalo. BUFFALO? The arm pit of the NFL if ever I've seen one.
Getting into wrestling was the best thing I could do, and thank god those guys found me and signed me to the three-year deal to wrestle in the southern hemisphere. Man, were those days great...Australian heavyweight champion, Oceania tag team championship, Inter-Global title holder...makes me wonder if this was the right way to go.
No damn it, it was...I think Oceania just ran it's course for me, I NEEDED to come home, I needed to make the next step in my career. Hell, Hulk Hogan wasn't going to languish in the AWA forever, Bret Hart couldn't stay in Canada...going home to Seattle to start wrestling was fine, Australia was better, but the WBSW...
This is step one. With its talent, its contacts to other feds, I am heading to the top. I have the looks, the talent, everything it takes to be a world heavyweight champion. All I need now is time, and a place to take my first step.
It's good to be back in Youngstown, I had a great college career. But I can't stay here when the next step in my career is up the road in Scranton, in Pennsylvania. All I know for sure is....
"These guys have nooooo idea what's headed their way."
