“This belt represents the future of the NAW. Corey Bull, Jason Price, Alaric, Gunner Hughes...all great wrestlers. All LEGENDS in this business. But their time came and went. Monday night isn't about the past. It's about the future.”
-Bohannon
-Bohannon
Those words ran through Alice's head ever since the day she heard them.
"The Future"
Whilst she may have been focusing on the past and making a legacy of her own, the current Horizon Champion was right. Sure everyone wants the dream, to be the Legacy Champion, to hold the big belt, to have that big payday and be near enough guaranteed to step into the ring on every show as the reason for every fan attending that night but the way Bohannon's words resonated with her, about how it is them who the future of NAW rests with, not with anyone else.
"The horizon, stretching out as far as the eye can see, the possibilities... The fact it never ends... In some way the symbolism is rather apt. The title is only as good as its holder, and like he said, those who went on to hold the Legacy Championship have had a spell as the Horizon Champion before going on to bigger things."
Alice sat there in the early evening light in that same abandoned complex she always seemed to be drawn to. With a small fire in an oil drum giving extra light and warmth and that wrecked shopping trolley being turned side on so she could sit on it, Alice kept running Bohannon's words through her head.
"I'm giving this man something of a dream match, and it's all because he is one of the few who realise that I am here to compete. He knows I'm here to wrestle and to push myself and whoever stands across from me harder than they have been pushed before... And that stirs something inside me... Much like the same thing Corey stirred in me... That burning fire, that fighting spirit... The love of the fight... Bohannon, I underestimated your character significantly..."
It annoyed Alice to see just how wrong she had it about Bohannon. Sure, some of her earlier points were spot on about his burning desire to prove his worth and ability were right, but the passion in his voice about how he wanted to make Meltdown's match the show everyone would talk about, about how he wanted to fight her because between the pair of them, they had shown up the rest of the roster with their committed displays.
"Maybe we are just two sides of the same coin Bohannon... I mean there is little difference between us when it comes to our professionalism and it is why I am relishing this chance given to me. I stand firm by my belief that the Legacy Championship is my main goal here and I will not stop until I have that belt around my waist... But perhaps this is fate... Perhaps me being put forward to face you under the watchful eye of the Hatebringer, the only two people who actually seem to pose a threat to his Legacy here... Perhaps this was meant to be all along."
Alice kept looking at the fire as she tried to get her thoughts in order.
"Our paths were always going to cross, it was inevitable and perhaps in this encounter, we can not only pit our skills against each other in what promises to be the match of the year, but we could also pit our ideals against each other... You speak of no limits and perhaps that is true, but there is always a limit to something, there is always an end, but as the late, great Ronnie James Dio said, the ending is just a beginner... Perhaps the end of your Horizon Championship reign is the beginning of bigger things for you to come, and if I should be the one to allow you to fulfil your potential, then so be it... If fate has decided this to be the case, then I will gladly play my part"
Alice closed her eyes as she took a deep breath.
"Bohannon, come pit your ambition against mine, fight my fire with yours, let us see whose flame burns brightest and whose flame will starve the other of air so it just barely flickers... I know I do not need to ask you to bring it, because like I said, we're two sides of the same coin, I know you will show up, I know you will give me everything and you know I will match it just to see who can give that little bit more... Because maybe.. Just maybe you are right... Maybe there are no limits for people like us, merely plateaus which we need to move away from so we can continue to ascend... And if my ascension is down to relieving you of the burden of a championship, then I will make that climb, using you as a boost"
Opening her eyes again, Alice looked up at the sky. The sunset had finally faded and was replaced by the clear night sky above her. Despite the fire giving some warmth, she could feel the subtle chill of the night air. Drawing her jacket closer, she folded her arms and stood up.
"I'll be waiting for you Bohannon... But don't keep me waiting too long because you might not be able to catch up to me if I get away from you"
