A bright light shines in the face of the WBSW World Heavyweight Champion as he sits in a chair behind a small table in a stuffy interrogation room. Two clean cut men wearing dark colored suits are standing on the opposite side of the table staring at him with suspicious looks on their faces as a set of photos lie on the table in front of them, allegedly linking him to some sort of illegal activities. Gunner reaches out and picks up the top photo and looks at it as the camera view slowly pans around behind him to reveal the contents. In the photo, Gunner is seen standing on the deck of a familiar looking yacht. He smiles to himself as he finishes looking over the photo and sets it back down on the stack. These federal agents think they have something on Gunner and they’re attempting to put some pressure on him, but unfortunately for them this wasn’t the first time he’d been in this position.
Gunner: “What can I say? I do a lot of fishing.”
Agent: “Is that right? And exactly who’s yacht are you “fishing” on in this picture?”
Gunner: “You know, I do a lot of fishing actually…..so I can’t recall every single boat that I’ve been on.”
The agent then drops a photo of a familiar Hispanic man in front of Gunner, and then continues his line of questioning.
Agent: “And this man here….I supposed he rented you his boat to go fishing?”
Gunner smiles and crosses his arms as he leans back in his chair.
Gunner: “Exactly. See, you guys have it all figured out already….you don’t even need me here.”
The agent walks up and slams his hands down on the table, leans over and getting right in Gunner’s face.
Agent: “You’re here because we received an anonymous tip from one of your co-workers in the WBSW! That little promotional video that you made for your last wrestling match ended up on YouTube, and they pointed us right to it! And as soon as we figure out what type of contraband you were smuggling on that yacht Mr. Hughes….I can promise you that I will personally be right there to see the look on your face when they read you the charges!”
Gunner appears to be unphased by the agent’s sudden aggression towards him. He knows this little game that they’re playing, and it’s a game that he already knows how to win.
Gunner: “Are we through here?”
Agent: “We’re through when I say we’re through Gunner! Why would somebody from your wrestling company want you in jail?”
Gunner laughs at the question.
Gunner: “Come on Sherlock……isn’t it obvious? I’m the WBSW World Champion, and I’ve destroyed everybody in my path since signing with the WBSW. How else are any of those stiffs on the roster supposed to get their hands on the world title belt? In fact, are you really going to insult your own intelligence and honestly believe that the tip was anonymous? We both know who it was on the other end of that correspondence.”
The agent leans back over the table and pulls up a chair to sit across from Gunner.
Agent: “Enlighten me Mr. Hughes. What superstar on the WBSW roster do you think pointed us in your direction?”
Gunner: “Oh I don’t know, how about the man who I just sent home with his tail between his legs last week. Since you’re such a fantastic investigator…you must have seen all the ranting and raving he did afterwards. He clearly doesn’t like the taste of sour grapes.”
Agent: “Steven Gold? Why would he care what you were doing in your spare time?”
Gunner: “Are you kidding me? The guy has a man crush on me. Just this past week he followed me around to restaurants, he chased around this small time wrestling manager who I did some business with in a sad attempt to get some inside information on me, and he pretended to be a title holder from a fake organization just to market himself as a champion in the WBSW. Those are the actions of a desperate man who is willing to resort to any lengths for attention. So now that he’s just run into the biggest roadblock of his make believe career, what other option does he really have? He’s already shown he can’t get the job done inside the ring, so why not try to get it done outside instead? If it really was him who gave you guys the “anonymous” tip, then it’s actually the smartest plan he’s had since he’s been in the WBSW. But unfortunately for him, I’m not guilty of anything. If anything, he's the criminal here...not me. He's the one trying to impersonate a professional wrestler.”
Agent: “Get over yourself Hughes, Gold seems like a pretty capable individual to me, and besides….from what I seen the match could have gone either way.”
Gunner: “Look, it’s not horseshoes….it’s professional wrestling. Coming close doesn’t mean a damned thing. When you climb through those ropes and the bell sounds, you either climb back out a winner or a loser, and that night Steven Gold climbed out the loser. In fact, he didn’t even climb out….he was carried out.”
Agent: “Well from what I seen, you both needed assistance leaving the ring that night.”
Gunner: “I never said it was an easy fight…..the guy brought it just like he said he was going to do and the match took a lot out of me. But you see, afterwards while he was getting checked out in the back and already starting to formulate his excuses, I was outside celebrating my victory with the fans and signing autographs. “
Agent: “Is that right? You used to work at Section 8 nightclub in Portland and you used to break people’s limbs for a living. And I won’t even go into detail on all of the other crap we have you linked to."
Gunner: “Allegedly.”
Agent: “Whatever Hughes….you get my point. You just don’t strike me as the type of guy who would embrace the fans of professional wrestling.”
Gunner: “It’s not that I embrace the fans, but as the WBSW Heavyweight Champion, I have an obligation. We had some guy walking into our organization waving around a title belt and claiming that it had some worth in the WBSW. The fans didn’t like that, and they expected that their champion wasn’t going to sit by and let somebody just waltz in to the WBSW and crap all over their Heavyweight Championship. So after the match, I was happy to celebrate my victory with them because it wasn’t just my victory…it was theirs too.”
Agent: “What about your opponent for this week, let me see here…”
The agent quickly looks through the paperwork that he has set out in front of him.
Agent: “Erik Loomis. What do you know about him?”
Gunner shrugs.
Gunner: “Nothing. I guess he used to be a big star in another organization, and Alex Morgan decided to bring him in as a special guest for this week’s edition of Live.”
Agent: “And you don’t think that maybe he gave the tip, trying to get the champ off of his game before the match?”
Gunner laughs at those comments, as he’s sat in chair’s like this one many times before and talked to many other agents in his years of contract work. It has always been a game of cat and mouse with them, and Gunner has always come out unscarred. He looks back up at the agent with a smile on his face.
Gunner: “Come on now detective…..you know this isn’t my first rodeo. It’s gonna take a lot more than an email to the FBI to toss me off my game.”
Agent: “We never said it was an email.”
Gunner: “You get my point. This is just an exhibition match anyway. I don’t even know Erik Loomis, but I can’t imagine that somebody would go to those lengths just to win an exhibition match. I could be wrong though….who knows. I did see that he had a few words to say about our match this week, and just like the rest of my past opponents, he’s made a fatal mistake before the match has even begun.”
Agent: “Really? And that is?”
Gunner: “He’s underestimating who I am. All of these people who I’ve faced so far in the WBSW, they seem to think that just because I’m new to the game, that they’re just going to come in and put on some sort of clinic against me. Loomis here, he thinks he already has this match in the bag just because he has some fans to support him. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to have fans…but if any of them are hoping to see Erik Loomis come into the WBSW and make a huge impact by getting one over on the WBSW Heavyweight Champion, they’re going to be leaving this week disappointed.”
Agent: “Why, you don’t think Loomis has a shot against you? You must need to have your hats specially made to fit that huge head of yours. I have Erik Loomis’ file right here, and he’s a decorated former champion. So what makes you think that somebody like you has a shot against him?”
Gunner stares across the table at the detective, annoyed by his choice of questions. Was he here to answer questions about his WBSW career, or about the video that these guys think implicate him of some wrong doing?”
Gunner: “Why the hell would you have his file?”
Agent: “Because I think your dirty Hughes, and something is going on here in these photos. So as far as I’m concerned, everybody you associate with is a suspect….even your opponents.”
Gunner: “Well I don’t care what he did in other places, because in those places there wasn’t a man like me standing in his way. All these people keep thinking that because they were successful in their prior wrestling promotions, that they can come to the WBSW and do the same…well that’s not gonna happen. Erik Loomis may be getting all hyped up to come into the WBSW and set off some fireworks with his homecoming, and I will be more than happy to oblige him. I will help him to put on a fantastic show for the fans and I will do my best to give everybody in the crowd their money’s worth. But at the end of the day I am still the WBSW Heavyweight Champion and that is the message that will be left when it is all said and done. Fan favorite or not, I will still leave Live undefeated. And judging by his words this week, Erik Loomis will have no idea what’s coming.”
Agent: “Well come on Hughes…it’s not like you’re an open book. I mean take these photos for instance. You know you were smuggling some sort of contraband, and so do we. It could be drugs, it could be weapons, it could even be a bomb for all we know. But here you sit…not saying a word. And you get surprised when somebody can’t read who you really are?”
Gunner instantly gets furious, and in his head he thinks about leaping across the table and grabbing the agent by his throat. These allegations were serious, and he didn’t like being accused of any of them. He starts to calm down since he knows that getting upset is exactly what the agents want him to do. When people get upset they’re not careful and they slip up…and perhaps say something to incriminate themselves. But in this case, Gunner knows that there’s nothing to incriminate, so he relaxes and leans back in his chair before responding.
Gunner: “A bomb? Really? That’s grasping a little bit don’t you think?"
Agent: “Well you get what I’m saying Hughes, we want to know what was in that boat.”
Gunner: “And that’s too damned bad, that’s between you and it’s owner….which isn’t me. You have my file right there…so you know that I’m a licensed repossession agent, as well as a licensed bounty hunter. I don’t have to answer to the authorities when it comes to a recovery. You don’t even know where that footage took place anyway, so what even gives you the jurisdiction to talk to me about it? You should just feel fortunate that I came in here on my own when you asked me to, because I’m a nice guy like that. But I can tell you right now, if you’re hoping to find drugs or weapons when you find that boat, then you’re going to end up real disappointed. I don’t go anywhere near either one of those things, and if that’s what was in the hull I would have sunk that boat instead of returning it to it’s owner.”
Agent: “Well there’s no way to prove that there wasn’t anything illegal in that boat Hughes, and that man in the photo is none other than…
Gunner cuts the agent off…
Gunner: “It doesn’t matter who the man is, or what was inside that boat. We both know that you have nothing on me and we both know that the boat and it’s contents are probably long gone by now anyway. I can walk out that door anytime I want....innocent until proven guilty am I right? That’s what I tell my bond jumpers when I’m bringing them in. Or is it the other away around with you guys?”
Gunner laughs and the agent sits back in his seat in frustration, knowing that Gunner is right on both accounts. Suddenly, a voice is heard yelling from off camera.
Voice: “Don’t answer another question!”
The view pans over to reveal a nerdy looking man in glasses and a suit standing in the open doorway.”
Man: “I’m Mr. Hughes' attorney and I say that this interview is over.”
The man then points towards the camera.
Man: “And I want a copy of that tape.”
Gunner gets up out of his seat and pats the man on the back as he walks past him and towards the door.
Gunner: “Yeah…me too, it will serve a good purpose.”
He glances at the screen and smiles as he give the thumbs up, and then the agent turns and yells at him as he’s leaving.
Agent: “Well don’t think that you’re off the hook, because we’ll be watching you Hughes! Even this week on Live when you’re getting ready to start your match…we will have eyes on you!”
Gunner: “Of course you will…..everybody will. That’s the point.”
He walks out and the scene fades.
