The scene opens up inside the Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, the headquarters of North Atlantic Wrestling. NAW reporter Barry Lincoln is seen standing outside an office door with a microphone in his hand, and he smiles into the camera as it focuses in on him.
Barry: “Hello everybody, Barry Lincoln here. I’m standing outside the office of Alex Morgan, where a source has indicated to me that a meeting between the boss and the NAW Champion Gunner Hughes is currently taking place. There has been no word on the nature of this meeting, and all we know right now is that the champion was last heard from just two nights ago on the UWL’s eighth edition of Between the Ropes where he made an open challenge for their upcoming event Spring Stampede, offering to put his UWL International Championship on the line against any UWL superstar. Does that announcement in the UWL have any bearing on why he’s meeting with Alex Morgan today? Hopefully we can get an answer to that question and…”
Just then Barry is interrupted by the door to the office opening, and after a few seconds out walks the NAW champion Gunner Hughes. He looks around with a stern, business-like expression on his face, then as he spots Barry standing nearby a menacing smile forms across his lips before he calls out to him.
Gunner: “Barry Lincoln…just the man I want to see.”
Barry gets a confused look on his face.
Barry: “Really? You want to see me? Because I heard you were having a meeting with Alex Morgan so I…”
Gunner interrupts Barry’s words as he walks past him and up to the camera.
Gunner: “Yeah I know, it was me who sent you the text. And actually Barry it’ isn’t even “you” who I wanted to see, but more so your camera man right here.”
Barry: “And why is that?”
Gunner stares into the camera with a cocky smile.
Gunner: “Because you’re right Barry, I was having a meeting with Alex Morgan and it was concerning a special challenge that I wanted to make this week…which I’d like to lay out right now.”
Barry: “Well we all heard the announcement you made on Between The Ropes concerning your UWL International Championship and the open challenge you laid out for Spring Stampede, is that the challenge you’re talking about? Or something different?”
Gunner: “No Barry, although that challenge in the UWL still stands, this here is something different….because this here concerns my NAW Championship and the man who has been named the next number one contender.”
Barry: “You’re talking about Virgil Keenan?”
Gunner: “You’re damned right I am. You see, I heard the comments from Virgil regarding his new status as the number one contender and how he feels that I haven’t paid enough attention to him yet in his NAW career.”
Barry: “Yes, I read the story on the website”
Gunner: “Well first of all Barry, I don’t know why this kid is so concerned with the lack of attention he’s gotten from me so far. I never claimed to be the NAW’s welcoming committee so what does he expect from me? A hug or something? Sure the kids, got skills and he can fight….but until this point what has separated him from every other person who happened to be looking at my title belt right?”
Gunner stares at Barry and Barry shrugs
Barry: “I’m not sure.”
Gunner: “Me either, but I’m sure anxious to find out. And the first way I plan to do that is to toss a challenge out to Virgil for this week’s Meltdown.”
Barry: “Well Virgil Keenan is booked to face Patrick Sparkman, and you’re set to go up against Cthulhuson in a champion versus champion non-title match. Are you suggesting that Alex scrap those two matches and book you to face Virgil instead?”
Gunner laughs.
Gunner: “No Barry, but I like how you think. Nothing would please me more than to just shut that kid up once and for all on Meltdown, but we both know that’s not going to happen. Me and Virgil will face each other for my NAW strap at Spring Breakdown, and it’s set to take place in a match type of my choosing. But on this next Meltdown, I’m willing to put that right on the line against the new number one contender.”
Barry: “Wait, so you’re saying that you want to challenge Virgil Keenan to a contest of some sort on the next Meltdown, and if he wins he gets to choose the stipulation for your title match at Spring Stampede?”
Gunner: “Exactly. Virgil thinks he should have some recognition in the NAW? Well from what I seen so far Patrick Sparkman is one tough son of a bitch so let’s see how Virgil fares against him. And me? I have my hands full with facing the current NAW Television Champion. There’s a reason Cthulhuson is the champ, and I recon I’ll find that reason out first hand once the bell rings. But make no mistake, I’m a champion too and I plan on showing Cthulhuson why I’m the most dominating man in our business.”
Barry: “So then what type of challenge do you propose to the number one contender?”
Gunner: “It’s simple….whichever one of us is more impressive in our match on Meltdown will get to pick the match stipulation at Spring Breakdown. Whether it’s by how fast we win our match, or even if we can win at all…whichever one of us leaves Meltdown with more momentum on our side will get to call the stipulation for the title match.”
Barry: “Well what if you both lose though? What happens then?”
Gunner laughs again.
Gunner: “You just think of everything don’t you Barry? Well I guess if something happens and we both lose our matches on Meltdown, then the fans will get to pick the stipulation for Spring Breakdown. How does that sound?”
Barry: “Well that sounds pretty exciting to me, but let me ask you this Gunner…..as the champion you already have the opportunity to choose the match type for Spring Breakdown, so why not just use that advantage and pick it yourself instead of risking it all and allowing Virgil a chance to gain it on Meltdown with nothing for him to lose in return?”
Gunner: “Virgil Keenan wants recognition in the NAW, so now I’m going to offer him an opportunity to get it. My name has dribbled out of his mouth on a few occasions since his debut in the NAW, so now he has a chance get a taste of what he’s been asking for. He thinks he can be a better champion than me? I guess maybe we’ll find out this coming week on Meltdown won’t we?”
Gunner starts to walk off, and Barry blurts out to him.
Barry: “Well how do you know he’s going to accept?”
Gunner stops and pauses for a moment, then he turns around with a cocky smile still on his face.
Gunner: “Oh he’ll accept alright. It’s like you said Barry…what does he have to lose?”
Gunner turns and walks off, and Barry looks back into the camera.
Barry: “Well you heard it….a “beat the clock” type of challenge for Meltdown laid down by the NAW champion. Will Virgil Keenan accept? And if he does, which one of these men will leave Meltdown with the right to pick the match stipulation at Spring Breakdown?”
Barry: “Hello everybody, Barry Lincoln here.
