The scene fades in on Mike Smith leaning against the side of a doorway with his arms crossed. He has his head slanted downward when he begins to speak.
Mike Smith: “What’s your fear, Sutton?”
Smith pauses and rubs his chin. He drags his feet out from the doorway.
Mike Smith: “Everybody has a fear. Some of us fear losing, spiders, snakes, heights, failing, perfection, and etc. There’s all sort of fears in the world. I’m curious, what are your fears? What are your vulnerabilities? Sutton, you come off very macho and unstoppable, but nobody is always superior and strong. People hide behind their insecurities in hopes their falsities are enough to push their enemies away. True strength comes in the shade of acceptance. Learning to accept our fears and growing from those downfalls is where it all begins, Sutton.”
Smith crosses his arms.
Mike Smith: “My fear is getting older. I always wonder when my body is going to give out. When am I going to start needing assistance to get in the ring? I’m not 20 something anymore. Hell, I’m not even in my 30s. Getting older is a concept that affects everybody in the world, but the part that fears me is not being able to do a sport I have grown to absolutely love, enjoy, and cherish. I started out hardcore in this business. Every time you are slammed through a table; chair hit upside your head; or thrown through a plate glass window takes a toll on your body. Our bodies aren’t exactly intended for such abuse.”
Smith holds his right hand up at an angle and starts to rub his bicep.
Mike Smith: “I used to be like you, Sutton. I used to believe I could do anything and receive anything from my opponents. I used to think I was unstoppable, but I was naïve back in then. I was just a 20 something year old kid who was high off of an adrenaline rush. Every year that went by and every hardcore match I put my body through, it got harder and harder to rebound back. Sutton, I’m trying to give you a piece of advice and open your eyes to realize. Nobody here is invincible from the hands of time. Nobody is truly unstoppable and sooner or later Sutton; you are going to find out that cold hard truth.”
Smith raises his right finger to the tip of his nose and quietly says, “sh.”
Mike Smith: “Sutton, you spend a lot of time focusing on my alliance. Well, I’m going to give you another piece of advice. I no longer want to be associated with my group. I no longer want to be a member of Power Trip. I don’t hate them, but as I have been reflecting back over the years, I have seen myself slipping away from reality. I have seen myself hidden in the shadows of Power Trip and I started to forget what I could do. My match with Nemesis two weeks ago was my eye opening experience I forgot how much I loved wrestling and wrestling for myself! I want to win another singles’ championship before my age forces me to hang up my boots forever. I want to be in the spotlight one more time before I have to throw in the towel. This is why come St. Valentine’s Massacre, I’m going to give it one hundred and twenty percent to walk out as the new Horizon Championship.”
Smith circles his hands around his waist.
Mike Smith: “I’m not going to take anything away from you, Sutton. Last Meltdown, Nemesis pushed me beyond my limits and I felt liberated because I was able to hang with such a new talent. I feel almost cheated this match is not a triple threat because I was looking forward to facing both Nemesis and you, Sutton. Sutton, as I researched your brief career in NAW and saw how dominating you have been upon your arrival, it reminds me what I used to do. It reminds me when I won my first Hardcore Championship. I was a beast in the ring. Sutton, I know how it feels to be undefeated for so long; it starts to cloud your head with total confidence. So much confidence that it borderlines arrogance. You have to be careful when it comes to crossing the line from confident too arrogant because arrogance can always play as somebody’s downfall. People who are so arrogant forget about the other person’s strengths. I hope you’re not forgetting about my strength.”
Smith holds his bicep toward the camera and starts to slide his hand over his cuts over his arm.
Mike Smith: “I hope you’re not ruling the unknown factor out because the unknown factor could always be the determining mark in a situation. I’m not going to overstep my boundaries and disrespect you because that’s not my nature. I’ve grown up since then, but I will say Sutton, I wish you the best of luck. This is going to be one of my best matches I have had in my wrestling career. This is going to be one of the biggest Horizon Championship matches NAW has had in a long time. Sutton, you’ve been crying for more competition and for two matches in a row you had competition. I hope you don’t forget; you are the one who asked for more competition. I hope you don’t cheat me out of this match or cheat me out of a victory. What do I mean?”
Smith pauses.
Mike Smith: “I mean if I win, I don’t want you to tell other people you let me win. I know how badly you want the Legacy title. So, it wouldn’t be too unusual for you to justify a loss by saying you simply dropped the title. I don’t know if you have the talent to do what Noah Hanson. He was one of a kind; he was a man who represented both the Legacy and Horizon’s divisions, but the competition would be way too much for you to grasp. So Sutton, like I said… good luck at St. Valentine Massacre.”
Smith tips his head and walks off as the scene fades to black.
